Integrated Tramway and Road Surface System TINES® TRAM
Construction of an overground pedestrian crossing with traffic signals in the area of the intersection of Rzeczypospolitej, Hynka, and Legionów streets in Gdańsk is another city investment that increases urban space accessibility. Thanks to this project, people with disabilities, seniors, and caregivers with children can easily cross one of the city’s main arteries.
As part of the project, a bicycle crossing over the railway track has also been established, and the most important element of the investment is the integrated tramway and road surface system TINES® TRAM. Additionally, the area has been properly lit and drained, and a new lawn has been planted near the crossing. This redevelopment, which enhances residents’ safety and comfort, is part of Gdańsk’s ongoing policy aimed at reclaiming the city center for pedestrians.
Challenges
- Selection of a pavement construction that enables the integration of tramway and road traffic with pedestrian and bicycle movement.
- Ensuring the accessibility of the “Bojana” tram stop for people with mobility impairments.
- Guaranteeing the safe crossing of the bicycle path over the tram tracks.
- Choosing a durable and cost-effective solution suitable for both high vehicular and tram traffic.
Solution
Modernizing and constructing transportation infrastructure demands a comprehensive approach to selecting structural solutions. These solutions must not only cater to the mobility needs of all users but also integrate seamlessly into the city’s efficient transport system.
From the residents’ perspective, it was particularly important to design sustainable solutions that not only serve basic functional requirements but also minimize the negative impacts of vibrations and noise generated by rail traffic on the surrounding environment.
